A new Mercedes-Benz is built to last, but a little bit of maintenance is required on all modern cars. Luckily, modern vehicles are equipped with maintenance reminder systems that can help you keep track of the basic care your car needs. Or, if something has gone wrong under the hood, modern cars can alert you, so you can get necessary help without risking further damage to the vehicle. Find out more about the oil system warning lights you might encounter on your Mercedes-Benz vehicle below.
Since the late 1990s, some Mercedes-Benz models have been equipped with video screen multimedia systems. All the latest vehicles from Mercedes-Benz now have touchscreen infotainment systems and ASSYST PLUS maintenance reminders. Instead of merely relying on a window sticker and the odometer to remember your next oil change, Mercedes-Benz ASSYST PLUS will keep track of your mileage and the maintenance needs of your particular car, and warn you when it's time to start thinking about that next oil change. Getting regular oil changes as the system prompts ensures you'll enjoy the powerful performance of your Mercedes-Benz for years to come.
Modern Mercedes-Benz engines are built to withstand a lot of heat and compression. That's why they have sophisticated cooling systems to dispose of that heat. However, there is such a thing as too hot. Excess heat can actually cause metal components to warp and bend, which could potentially lead to severe engine damage, such as failed engine gaskets or bent valves. When you see that the oil temperature in your vehicle is too high, pull over and allow the engine to cool off as soon as possible. If the engine continues to overheat, consider getting a tow if you're far from home. Driving for more than a few moments with an engine that's overheating risks damage to the engine.
The oil helps to keep the engine cool, but its primary responsibility is lubricating all the engine's moving parts. An oil pump ensures oil flows to all appropriate points inside the engine. If the engine oil becomes too old and develops sludge, this can disrupt flow of oil to the oil pump, leading to a low oil pressure condition in the engine. That's one reason why regular oil changes are critical. If the engine oil pressure is low, the engine's moving parts may not be getting properly lubricated, which can also lead to severe damage if not addressed right away.
On modern Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the check engine light (or a maintenance alert in the infotainment system) can indicate a variety of problems -- from ordinary, everyday issues like a suboptimal air/fuel ratio due to a clogged air filter to severe issues with the engine. When you see such an alert in your car, don't panic. Simply bring the vehicle to an authorized Mercedes-Benz service center where we can use our advanced diagnostic computers to download data from your vehicle and get to the bottom of your problem. In many cases, you'll only need a quick, affordable maintenance need taken care of to fix this problem in your Mercedes-Benz.
In general, if you have an older Mercedes-Benz model with a more traditional, analog gauge cluster, here's the rule of thumb to know: amber colored lights are cautionary lights, such as a check engine light or a tire pressure warning light. These indicate a problem that should be addressed soon, but which shouldn't compromise your safety if you continue to operate the vehicle. However, red colored warning lights, or any warning lights that are blinking or pulsing, indicate a severe problem with your vehicle. It may not be safe to continue driving. Play it safe and pull over and give us a call at Mercedes-Benz of Temecula. We can help you arrange a tow and have your vehicle assessed by the experts.
