Lightweight yet sturdy, Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC® is a powerful all-wheel drive system with a purpose: to put all four wheels to work. Whether you’re traversing the rocky hills around Escondido or venturing to a colder climate, 4MATIC® is built to handle almost any terrain. It’s available on most new Mercedes-Benz vehicles, including:

  • Compact: CLA, C-Class, E-Class, SLC, CLS, SL, S-Class, and Mercedes-AMG® GT
  • SUV: GLA, GLC, GLE, and GLS

Specialized Core Systems

4MATIC® all-wheel drive relies on a series of features to send torque to the wheels that need it most. Two of these systems include:

  • Electronic Stability Program (ESP®): If wheelspin, understeer, or oversteer are detected, ESP® can brake individual wheels and reduce engine power, allowing you to regain control of the vehicle.
  • 4-Wheel Electronic Traction System (4ETS®): Using sensors, 4ETS® detects wheelspin and pulses the brakes of the slipping wheel, then sends torque to the wheel(s) with the most grip.

Why 4MATIC® All-Wheel Drive?

So, what separates 4MATIC® from other AWD systems? For one, 4MATIC® is fully integrated. Some AWD systems can simply be added onto a 2WD vehicle after it’s been manufactured—but not 4MATIC®. For the best driving experience, Mercedes-Benz and AMG® vehicles with 4MATIC® are built from start to finish as all-wheel drive machines; the system isn’t tacked on later as an afterthought.
